For the kids

There’s always something happening just for the kids at Outback Festival. Families travel from both the city and country to the Outback so that their kids can have a great Outback holiday experience.

Join in on these fun Outback games and activities for the chance to take home a festival medallion. Pre-registration is essential, so please head to the Outback Festival office on arrival to register.


Little Swaggies event

This event involves a series of fun events linked to the story of Waltzing Matilda.  Events include the Swaggie’s hat toss, the Tucker Bag relay, the Billy Can dash, and Dodge the Jolly Jumbucks.

  • When:
    • Tuesday 19 September (8.00am at Elderslie Street)
    • Wednesday 20 September (8.15am at Long Waterhole)
    • Thursday 21 September (8.00am at Elderslie Street)
    • Saturday 23 September (8.30am at Elderslie Street)
  • Age groups: 7 to 9 yrs (limited numbers)
  • Cost: $10 per person
  • Nominations:  taken at the Outback Festival Office by 11 September

Under 8’s Teddy Bear Picnic

Children are asked to bring their favourite teddy to join in a range of activities to include Sand Art, games, music and face-painting.  They’ll also get a visit from Sid the Pelican and other favourite characters.

  • When: Tuesday 19 September – 3.30pm at Patricia Bucknell Memorial Park, Vindex Street
  • Age groups: Under 8 yrs (children to be accompanied by an adult)
  • Cost: FREE Event

Children’s Wobble Board Painting competition

Children are to bring their own brushes and containers to paint their favourite painting on the Wobble Board.  A Wobble Board is a piece of fibreboard used as a musical instrument, so maybe you can play some music later!  Wobble Boards and paints supplied.

  • When:  Tuesday 19 September – 10.30am at Elderslie Street
  • Age groups: Under 5’s; 5-8 years; 9-12 years
  • Cost: $5 per child
  • Nominations: taken at the Outback Festival Office by Friday 15 September

Bushman’s Egg Throwing event

Test your skills in handling this very fragile item!  Work in pairs with a thrower and catcher.  The aim of the game is to try to throw and catch eggs without breaking the shell.

  • When:  Tuesday 19 September – 12.00pm at Elderslie Street
  • Age group: Primary & Secondary school age children
  • Cost: $5 per pair
  • Nominations: taken at the Outback Festival Office on arrival

FREE Kangagang Shows & Workshops

Children will thoroughly enjoy the multi award winning Kangagang’s entertaining “Outback in the Aussie Bush” Shows and “Aussie Bush Instrument” Workshops.  The Shows have a cast of colourful character Aussie animal hand puppets, wrap & ride costumes for the children to wear and Aussie bush instruments to play.  Children will have the opportunity to interact and have loads of Bonza fun!

  • Age groups: Suitable for childcare to Grade 4 Primary School students

Children’s Wool Bale rolling competition

Children will need to pair with a mate (or we will find you a mate) for the opportunity to roll a bale of wool down the main street of Winton!

  • When: Wednesday 20 September – 2.00pm at Elderslie Street
  • Age groups: Primary & Secondary school age children
  • Cost:  $5 per pair
  • Nominations: taken at the Outback Festival Office on arrival

Swag Tossing event

Take the challenge and toss Matilda’s Swag into the ring. Swag will be supplied.

  • When:  Wednesday 20 September
  • Age groups:  Primary & Secondary school age children
  • Cost: $5 per person
  • Nominations: taken at the Outback Festival Office

FREE Whip Cracking Workshops

Children will be coached by Australian whip-cracking champion Nathan Grigg in the skills of whip-cracking.  Learn how to crack the whip!

  • When:  Thursday 21 September
  • Age groups: Primary & Secondary school age children
  • Cost: FREE Event
  • Nominations: taken at the Outback Festival Office on arrival

Meggsie Cart Races 

You will need one pusher and one passenger to test your skills in racing your meggsie cart on a set course for your chance to win a Festival medallion.  Meggsie Carts are supplied.

  • When:  Friday 22 September
  • Age groups: 8-10 years and 11-13 years  (limited to 25 teams of two)
  • Cost:  $5 per team
  • Nominations: taken at the Outback Festival Office
